Tips on creating the perfect entrance to your home

We hear it’s all about the journey not the destination, but what does that mean for your front garden? Here are some simple garden design tips to consider when making an entrance.

Once through the front gate it’s important that a visitor knows where to head, but at the same time you don’t necessarily want a direct pathway leading straight to the front door. Consider how you might create a more pleasurable journey through the space, so there’s time to smell the roses and admire the planting.

If there is a level change from the gate to the front door, rather than narrow steps consider using larger step pads to bring you up or down. Be generous with path widths, one metre is a minimum.

Front entrances need to be clearly defined in a house and it’s an opportunity to be bold and brave.

Ensure what you select compliments the house style, but don’t be afraid to make a statement. Carefully selected elements that play with scale can work wonders. For example, a pair of large urns, or a single imposing planter will help to draw the eye and lead the way to your home’s entrance.
